inch/millimeter brass ruler — construct perpendicular lines, arcs, and the Golden Section

𝞅-ruler ("phi-ruler")

There is something special about designing by hand. Be it a quick sketch or drawing a detailed and accurate model, the tactile experience is important to connect you to your work.

𝞅-Ruler is for people who draw things by hand, love modernist design, and who care about quality materials

easily generate perpendicular lines using the slits

draw a line along the edge of the ruler and then mark the slit, and you'll have two lines which are at right angles to each other. There is one aligned with the inches-side 0 and another on the millimeter side, so you can make readily make axes in either scale. If you want to draw a line perpendicular to a given one, just align the latter in the slit and then draw along the edge of the ruler.

using the holes, draw arcs and circles of various radii (in 1"/10mm increments)

hold a pencil in the centre hole and place another pencil at your desired radius, and just rotate.

easily generate a Golden Section

Perhaps the most innovative feature of the ruler is the 𝞅-line:  mark this line on the drawing surface and intersect it with a vertical line to generate a Golden Section of any size. (The 45°-line is also provided.)

The 0s are inset from the edge of the ruler to increase functionality: you can hold the ruler steady with the left-hand and have the 0 and accompanying slit centralized. The slits and holes are 1.5mm wide to ensure precision. The markings go right to the ends of the ruler so you can place the ruler against an object and measure out a distance. Inches and centimeters labelled at 0 (inset) and prime numbers, decluttering the surface.

Artwork

𝞅-Ruler is presented on a Bauhaus-inspired information card, which explains its main functions. It is printed on acid free, sustainably sourced, 324 gsm eggshell paper.

𝞅-Ruler is die cut out of 1.2mm thick C280 brass, which makes it strong, sturdy, and steady on the drawing surface.  (Currently-available brass rulers are less than 1mm thick.)  It is polished to a high satin finish; C280 brass has a warm sheen and is often used in architectural applications. The die cutting ensures that the markings will never wear off. The extra thickness also makes it safe to use with a utility knife.
